The Science Of Tikkaway

Gopi Nair grew up in Kerala, India. He came to the U.S. in 2001, pursuing a career as a chef. Two years ago he opened Tikkaway Grill, a healthful fast-casual Indian restaurant on Orange Street. Offering economically priced, “fast, fresh, healthy Indian food” to order with gluten-free and vegan options, the outlet (which is halal) became a big hit.

New Haven Police Reward Drivers Who Yield to Pedestrians
July 28, 2015
Police in New Haven are rewarding drivers who follow the law and yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk. Police say they’ve seen an increase in collisions between cars and pedestrians in crosswalks lately. The initiative is part of an effort to keep everyone safe. “I handled an accident particularly on Whalley Avenue, where someone was fatally killed,” said New Haven police Sgt. Mark O’Neill. He watched the intersection of Orange Street and Court Street for drivers who followed the law, and handed them gift cars to nearby Tikkaway Grill.

Review: Tikkaway Grill in New Haven
July 11, 2015
In 2008, when the restaurateur Gopi Nair was working as managing partner for Fairfield County’s Coromandel group of Indian eateries, he had what he calls “a 2 a.m. eureka! moment.” He had spent three years trying to entice more discerning customers into trying Indian cuisine, partly by hosting special events like wine-pairing dinners at Coromandel’s South Norwalk location. But one night, he had the sudden realization that he needed to refocus his efforts.

Tikkaway Grill: Customized Indian Food
January 9, 2014
It’s so easy to get stuck in a lunch rut. Frequenting the local eateries quickly wear out, and your midday meal becomes an unenjoyable chore. Sandwich shops are convenient and generally let you pick exactly what you want between the bread, but maybe it’s time to put the bread down and try something new. Tikkaway Grill in downtown New Haven takes that choose-what-you-want concept and applies it to Indian food, and the results are delicious.

Server: Are you ready to order? Diner: No. Not really. You see, I don’t really know much about Indian food. I am afraid that it will be too spicy for me. All I know is Chicken Tikka Masala and Saag Paneer. I had those once before and I liked them. Maybe I should play it safe and just order that. And that is how many a conversation started, while Gopi was managing Coromandel Indian restaurant in South Norwalk. One by one, and with great pride, Gopi tried to educate his diners as he converted them into happy Indian-cuisine-savants.”

Tikkaway, come to stay
September 20, 2013
“First, there was Chipotle. Then, there was Panera Bread. Maison Mathis landed around the corner. Next comes Pinkberry. All of these establishments, which joined or will be joining downtown New Haven’s restaurant scene in 2013, triangulate the fast-food industry’s mantra of efficiency and casual-ness with quality guarantee. And as it stands, there is a new-comer—a gem of one, at that—tucked away on Orange and Chapel, just one block before Elm City Market. Here comes Tikkaway, or as you might hear it referred to: the ‘Indian Chipotle’.”

Gopi’s Dream: Indian Food, Subway-Style
September 10, 2013
“Restaurateur Gopinath (Gopi) Nair has opened a to-go spot on Orange Street that he believes can do for Indian what Subway did for subs and Chipotle did for Mexican food: make the dishes fast, cheap, and easy to eat on the run.”

Tikkaway Grill: Indian “Fast-Food” Opens in New Haven
September 1, 2013
“There is a movement underway in New Haven that may change the way Americans view Indian food. Often the domain of full-service restaurants, Indian cuisine has yet to enter the category of ‘fast casual.’ This scarcity is what some would call an opportunity.”
